New Delhi: The Home Ministry’s tableau in this year’s Republic Day parade promises to be a distinctive showcase, focusing on the implementation of new criminal laws across India. An official revealed on Saturday that the tableau will emphasize digital evidence collection and rapid response mechanisms as its key attractions.
The theme of the tableau centers around the recently enforced laws—the Indian Justice Code, Indian Civil Security Code, and Indian Evidence Act—effective since 1 July 2024. These laws represent some of the most significant legal reforms of the century, replacing colonial-era punitive laws with a justice system rooted in Indian philosophy.
Modern Justice System on Display
The tableau will illustrate how these new laws have been adopted nationwide, presenting India’s transition towards a modern, technology-driven, timely, and citizen-focused judicial system. Key features highlighted will include the use of e-evidence for digital proof gathering, the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System for biometric recognition, e-summons enabling digitally signed court summons, and technology-enabled court processes such as virtual hearings.
Interoperable Criminal Justice System
The display will also demonstrate the interoperability among police, forensic units, prosecution, courts, and prisons under the integrated criminal justice system. Mobile forensic units will be showcased, symbolizing swift forensic access and rapid response at crime scenes. Additionally, the tableau will highlight rapid response mechanisms like control room systems, CCTV surveillance, and the growing role of trained women police officers in the field.
Progressive and Inclusive Legal Approach
The new laws incorporate community service as a form of corrective punishment, reflecting a progressive and humane approach to justice, which will also be depicted. The inclusion of multilingual versions of the new legal codes underscores the government’s commitment to making laws accessible, inclusive, and transparent for all citizens.
