TMC Leaders Aide Sent to Police Custody Over Soil Theft Charges in Kolkata

Abhishek Banerjees aide Sumit Roy has been remanded to police custody for 10 days in a soil theft case linked to illegal land grabbing.

Kolkata, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : A Kolkata court has ordered 10 days of police custody for Sumit Roy, an aide to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, following his arrest in a soil theft case. Roy was presented in court on Saturday after being detained by Diamond Harbour police.

This latest development comes after Roy was already in judicial custody since his arrest on September 10 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over illegal land grabbing allegations in West Midnapore district. He was implicated in a case involving the theft of soil valued at approximately ₹400 crore.

On October 28, police arrested Roy under a case registered at the Kalitala-Ashuti police station in the same district. A police official stated that it was essential to conduct thorough questioning of Roy regarding his involvement and to gather information about other influential beneficiaries connected to the soil theft scandal. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of corruption and the sources of financial transactions involved.

The case first gained attention when former TMC MLA Sujay Hazra was arrested for illegal land grabbing in Salboni. During the investigation, Roy’s name emerged, leading to his subsequent arrest by CID officials after multiple rounds of questioning. The CID’s charge sheet details the mechanisms through which funds reached Roy’s office in the illegal land grabbing case.
