Remembering Ramesh Deo: A Legendary Journey in Hindi and Marathi Cinema

Mumbai witnessed the rise of a remarkable talent in both Marathi and Hindi cinema with the legendary actor Ramesh Deo, whose powerful performances won the hearts of millions. Beyond films, he skillfully showcased his artistry in advertisements and theatre, becoming a beloved face across audiences. Ramesh Deo remains an inspiration to both Marathi and Bollywood film industries.

Born on 30 January 1929 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Ramesh Deo’s interest in arts and acting was evident from childhood. His journey into films began unexpectedly when he accompanied his elder brother to a horse race. There, he met Marathi director Raja Paranjape, who considered Ramesh lucky after winning a race with his help. This encounter led to Ramesh Deo’s first film offer, marking the start of his cinematic career.

Ramesh Deo made his acting debut with a cameo in the Marathi film ‘Patalachi Por’ and played the lead role in ‘Andhala Magato Ek Dola’ in 1956. His impactful acting soon earned him recognition in Marathi cinema. He ventured into Hindi films with his first release ‘Aarti’ in 1962. Over the years, he acted alongside stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Anand’, Rajesh Khanna in ‘Aap Ki Kasam’, Shatrughan Sinha in ‘Mere Apne’, and shared screen space with Dharmendra and Hema Malini in several films.

With a career spanning decades, Ramesh Deo appeared in over 285 Hindi films and more than 190 Marathi movies. His presence extended to over 250 advertisements, making his face familiar in every household. Additionally, he contributed significantly to Marathi theatre, winning the admiration of theatre enthusiasts.

Ramesh Deo’s personal life was closely linked to the film world as well. His wife, Seema Deo, is also an actress. The couple met on the sets of the 1962 film ‘Varadakshina’ and tied the knot the same year. They have two sons: Ajinkya Deo, a Marathi actor, and Abhinav Deo, a film director.

His outstanding contributions were recognised with numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Pune International Film Festival in 2013.

Ramesh Deo passed away on 2 February 2022 at the age of 93 in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. His death was mourned across the film and theatre communities. His legacy lives on through his vast body of work in films, advertisements, and theatre.
