Mumbai, August 7: Anupam Shyam Ojha remains a beloved figure for his portrayal of ‘Thakur Sajjan Singh’ in the popular series ‘Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya.’ His powerful voice and impactful performances earned him a special place in both television and film. However, in the later stages of his life, he faced serious health issues and financial struggles. During this challenging time, financial assistance from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath garnered significant attention. Anupam Shyam passed away on August 8, 2021, but his contributions continue to be celebrated.
Born on September 20, 1957, in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Anupam had a passion for acting from a young age. He completed his early education in Pratapgarh and pursued higher studies at Awadh University. Later, he trained in theatre at the Bharatendu Natya Academy in Lucknow, honing his craft. After completing his training, he joined the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts in Delhi, where he gained valuable experience before moving to Mumbai to chase his dreams.
His journey in Mumbai was not easy. Initially, he landed small roles. Interestingly, his film career began with the international film ‘Little Buddha.’ He later appeared in Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed film ‘Bandit Queen’ and made his mark in several notable films, including ‘Lagaan,’ ‘Nayak,’ ‘Shakti,’ ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ ‘Wanted,’ ‘Halla Bol,’ and ‘Rakt Charitra.’ He often portrayed villainous or strong characters.
Despite working in films for many years, Anupam gained widespread recognition in 2009 with the Star Plus series ‘Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya,’ where he played the beloved character Thakur Sajjan Singh. This role became so popular that audiences began to know him more by his character’s name than his real name. He later acted in several other TV shows, including ‘Pratigya 2,’ ‘Krishna Chali London,’ and ‘Doli Armaano Ki.’
The final phase of his life was particularly challenging. He battled severe kidney disease for an extended period and required regular dialysis. The rising medical costs led to financial difficulties. During this time, his brother appealed for help from the public. Anupam later revealed in an interview that when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath learned of his condition, he provided ₹20 lakh for his treatment.
Anupam expressed gratitude for this assistance, stating it was crucial for his recovery. He mentioned that CM Adityanath personally knew him and appreciated his work.
During his treatment, there was a brief improvement in his health, allowing him to return to work. He even began shooting for ‘Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya 2.’ However, his health continued to decline. Anupam Shyam passed away at the age of 63 on August 8, 2021, at Lifeline Hospital in Mumbai, leaving a wave of sorrow in the television and film industry.
