New Delhi, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : September 10 marks a significant day in Indian military history, commemorating the valor, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit of Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid. His heroic actions during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War have solidified his status as one of the nation’s greatest war heroes. Even decades later, his legacy is honored and remembered.
Abdul Hamid displayed remarkable courage against the modern Patton tanks of the enemy, sacrificing his life while boosting the morale of the Indian army.
Born on July 1, 1933, in the village of Dhamupur in Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh, Hamid was raised in a modest family. His father, Mohammad Usman, was a tailor, and his mother was Sakina Begum. From an early age, he embraced values of bravery, discipline, and patriotism.
Hamid joined the Indian Army’s Grenadiers Regiment on December 27, 1954, and spent most of his military career with the 4 Grenadiers Battalion. His name became immortalized during the pivotal Battle of Asal Uttar in the 1965 war, when Pakistan launched a significant attack with American-made Patton tanks.
During the conflict, Hamid skillfully targeted and destroyed numerous enemy tanks using his recoilless gun. He is credited with taking out seven to eight tanks, a feat that played a crucial role in altering the course of the battle.
For his extraordinary valor and ultimate sacrifice, Hamid was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor. The award was presented to his wife, Rasoolan Bibi, by then-President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on January 26, 1966. In addition, he received several other accolades, including the Samar Seva Medal and the Defense Medal.
On September 10, 1965, while targeting enemy tanks in the Khemkaran sector of Punjab, Hamid was severely injured when a shell struck his jeep. He succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield, inspiring Indian soldiers and leading to significant losses for the Pakistani tank regiment. The Battle of Asal Uttar is regarded as one of the Indian Army’s greatest victories.
Abdul Hamid is more than just a soldier; he symbolizes courage, duty, and patriotism. He demonstrated that victory in war is achieved not only through weaponry but also through determination and strategy, even against formidable foes.
