Rekhas Iconic Role in Umrao Jaan Came Without a Fee, Reveals Director Muzaffar Ali

Mumbai, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : Rekha’s portrayal of the titular character in the 1981 film “Umrao Jaan” has become synonymous with her legacy in Hindi cinema. The film, which explores themes of love, loneliness, and poetry, showcased Rekha’s remarkable talent and depth. Her performance has left an indelible mark, making it hard to mention “Umrao Jaan” without conjuring her image.

Interestingly, Rekha did not accept any payment for her role in the film. Director Muzaffar Ali shared this fascinating detail during an interview in June 2025, coinciding with the film’s re-release. He explained that Rekha was emotionally invested in the character and chose not to assign a monetary value to her involvement.

Ali revealed, “Rekha was my first choice for the role of Umrao Jaan. I envisioned a specific image for the character, and only she could bring it to life on screen. Her eyes conveyed a unique depth, allowing her to express emotions of fragility and resilience in a single moment.”

To secure Rekha’s participation, Ali, accompanied by his wife Subhashini, approached Rekha’s mother. They informed her that while they wished to make “Umrao Jaan,” they could not offer a salary. When Rekha returned home, her mother relayed the message. Intrigued by the story, Rekha met with Ali and became captivated by the narrative. Ali assured her that while he couldn’t pay her, this film would immortalize her talent. Rekha ultimately received the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.

In the interview, Ali noted that Rekha devoted considerable effort to understanding the poetry integral to her character. Preparation began nearly a year before filming, as poetry served as a vital tool to grasp the character’s emotions. Her delivery, speech, and expressions were all products of this extensive preparation.

In “Umrao Jaan,” Rekha plays the character of Ameeran, who transforms into Umrao Jaan due to her circumstances. Despite facing numerous challenges, she carves out her identity through her artistry, poetry, and acting.

The film is based on the 1899 Urdu novel “Umrao Jaan Ada” by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. It features notable actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Sheikh, and Raj Babbar in significant roles, with music composed by Khayyam and vocals by Asha Bhosle.
