New Delhi, August 7: Reactions are pouring in from various political leaders and religious figures across the country regarding Maulana Sajid Rashidi’s comments on the Kanwar Yatra. Many leaders have criticized his statement, emphasizing that it touches upon the religious sentiments of millions of devotees. Some have labeled it as a divisive remark within society.
In Lucknow, Maulana Saif Abbas Naqvi, president of the Shia Central Moon Committee, responded strongly to Rashidi’s comments. He stated that Rashidi’s views are personal. People may assume he is a Muslim based on his beard and cap, but he has no genuine connection to Islam. Naqvi mentioned that he has often seen Rashidi involved in matters aimed at defaming Muslims.
He asserted that a true Muslim does not comment on others’ religious journeys or beliefs. Based on information received, he indicated that Rashidi is an active member of the National Muslim Forum, an organization linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Naqvi accused such individuals of speaking on cue to create societal rifts and division among communities.
In Bihar’s Kaimur, BSP MLA Satish Kumar Singh Yadav stated that he had not heard the relevant statement and would refrain from commenting directly. He emphasized that the Kanwar Yatra is a matter of religious faith for millions and should not be politicized. Everyone has the right to worship according to their faith. Yadav mentioned that he has participated in the Kanwar Yatra multiple times, walking over 100 kilometers, and questioned the wisdom of commenting on someone’s religious beliefs.
Former BJP MP Vinay Katiyar from Ayodhya also reacted to Rashidi’s statement. He noted that Rashidi frequently makes absurd comments. He highlighted the importance of welcoming Kanwariyas properly and mentioned that better arrangements are being made for them at various locations. Central Minister Nitin Gadkari’s efforts in improving roads have greatly facilitated the journey for devotees.
In Hyderabad, BJP leader Dr. Sarita Agarwal criticized Rashidi’s remarks, calling it highly irresponsible to link the Kanwar Yatra with terrorism. She questioned why those who avoid labeling actual terrorists as such would label devotees following an ancient tradition as terrorists.
Dr. Agarwal stated that the Kanwar Yatra symbolizes devotion and faith in Lord Shiva, with devotees often walking barefoot over long distances. She urged that anyone who truly believes in their religion and its teachings should refrain from making irresponsible comments against other faiths. She appealed to Maulana Sajid Rashidi to stop calling followers of Sanatan Dharma terrorists.
