Paris, March 25: French club RC Lens has denied Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) request to reschedule their upcoming Ligue 1 match due to Champions League commitments.
The match is set to take place on April 11 at Lens’ home ground. Meanwhile, PSG is scheduled to compete against Liverpool FC in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
PSG had requested the postponement, citing their busy schedule, but Lens firmly stated that domestic league matches cannot be altered based on one team’s European obligations.
In a statement, the club emphasized that such changes would compromise the integrity of the sport and disrupt the balance of the league.
Lens also expressed concern that if such adjustments were made, the French league could gradually become a “secondary” competition, aligned with European tournaments.
The final decision now rests with the organizers of Ligue 1. In the past, the league has occasionally adjusted schedules to assist teams participating in European competitions.
This match is crucial for the title race, with Lens currently just one point behind PSG, albeit having played one more game.
Lens further noted that if the match were postponed, it would adversely affect their schedule, leaving them without a match for 15 days, followed by a congested fixture list.
On the other hand, PSG secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals by defeating Chelsea FC with an aggregate score of 8-2 in the Round of 16. They will face Liverpool in the first leg on April 9 as they aim for their second Champions League title.
