
New Delhi, May 1: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Friday that 98.47% of the ₹2000 notes have been returned since the withdrawal announcement. This statistic comes nearly three years after the decision to remove these notes from circulation.
The central bank decided to withdraw the ₹2000 notes on May 19, 2023, as part of its currency management strategy. At that time, the total value of these notes was ₹3.56 lakh crore. According to the latest figures, this amount has now decreased to just ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026.
The RBI stated, “When the announcement to withdraw ₹2000 notes was made on May 19, 2023, their total value was ₹3.56 lakh crore, which has now reduced to ₹5,451 crore.”
The central bank also mentioned that since the announcement, facilities to exchange ₹2000 notes have been made available at 19 issue offices across the country. Starting October 9, 2023, individuals can deposit these notes into their bank accounts at these offices.
Furthermore, the RBI clarified that people can still send ₹2000 notes to any RBI issue office through India Post from any post office in the country for deposit into their bank accounts.
The RBI emphasized that despite being withdrawn from circulation, the ₹2000 notes remain legal tender.
