Ranchi Royals Open Account with Convincing Win over Srachi Bengal Tigers

Ranchi Royals secured a commanding 4-1 victory against defending champions Srachi Bengal Tigers in the Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26 on Sunday, opening their account with three valuable points. The home side impressed their passionate crowd by scoring four goals in the last six minutes of the match.

Early Pressure and Goal Attempts

The match began with Bengal Tigers applying high-press tactics to keep Ranchi under pressure. They earned an early penalty corner in the second minute but failed to convert it into a goal. Ranchi’s Sam Lane showed early intent, winning a penalty corner in the fifth minute, but his shot was blocked. Both goalkeepers faced tests early on, with Ranchi’s Suraj Karkera making a crucial save in the ninth minute. Despite continuous attacks from both sides, the first quarter ended goalless.

First Goal and Intense Mid-Game Battle

The intensity continued in the second quarter. In the 25th minute, Bengal Tigers took the lead even while playing with one less player due to a green card. Abhishek struck powerfully towards goal, and the league’s youngest player, Ketan Kushwaha, deflected it into the net. Ranchi responded quickly, with captain Tom Boon nearly equalising just before halftime, but Bengal’s goalkeeper James Carr made a superb save to keep the Tigers ahead 1-0 at the break.

Strong Defence and Late Comeback

In the third quarter, Bengal Tigers adopted a defensive strategy with five players in the backline to maintain their lead. Ranchi tried to find space by playing wide, but Bengal’s defence remained organised and resilient. The Tigers had multiple penalty corner opportunities but were denied by Ranchi’s defence led by Manpreet and Yashdeep.

The final quarter belonged entirely to Ranchi Royals. In the 54th minute, captain Tom Boon intercepted the ball from a Bengal player, quickly combined passes, and scored with a brilliant reverse shot to level the score at 1-1. This goal invigorated the home team. Just two minutes later, veteran Mandeep Singh scored to give Ranchi a 2-1 lead.

Ranchi kept up the pressure as Bengal’s defence began to weaken. Lachlan Sharp made it 3-1 in the 58th minute, and Tom Boon sealed the win with his second goal in the final minute, completing a comprehensive 4-1 victory for the Ranchi Royals.

This strong performance will boost Ranchi Royals’ confidence as the league progresses, marking a promising start in the 2025-26 season.
