Rajasthan Leads India in Crop Insurance Coverage with Over 1 Million Hectares Insured

Jaipur, August 6: Rajasthan has emerged as a national leader in implementing the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme (PMFBY), providing financial security to millions of farmers affected by natural disasters and adverse weather conditions.

The state boasts the highest number of registrations under this scheme, with over 62.5 million farmers enrolled, making PMFBY a crucial safety net for the agricultural community in Rajasthan.

During the 2025-26 period, more than 1 million hectares of land were brought under crop insurance coverage through PMFBY, representing the highest area insured among all states in India. This insured area accounts for 36% of the state’s total cultivated area, surpassing the national average of 32%.

In terms of crop insurance coverage, Rajasthan ranks among the top states, trailing only behind Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh in percentage terms. Significant insurance coverage has been recorded across various districts during the 2025-26 period.

In Churu, over 13.5 million hectares, in Barmer over 11.4 million hectares, and in Bikaner over 9.92 million hectares have been insured. The coverage in Churu represents 77% of the total crop area, while Barmer and Nagaur have 69% and 47% coverage, respectively, indicating the growing acceptance of this scheme among farmers.

Over the five-year period leading up to 2025-26, more than 5.21 million hectares of land have been insured under the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme and the restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme. During this time, farmers contributed over ₹4,650 crores in premiums, the highest in the country. More than 18.81 million insurance applications were recorded, with eligible farmers receiving over ₹18,189 crores in insurance claims.

The state government continues its efforts to provide insurance coverage to more farmers, significantly expanding the scope of crop insurance during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 periods.

In both Kharif and Rabi seasons, over 7.53 million crop insurance policies have been issued, covering crops valued at approximately ₹1 lakh crores. Under these policies, claims exceeding ₹4,498 crores have already been distributed.
