New Delhi, May 13: Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed strong opposition to the CBI director selection process in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He criticized the procedure as biased and stated that he cannot withdraw from his constitutional responsibilities by participating in it.
In a post on the social media platform X, Gandhi shared, “I have written to the Prime Minister to register my protest against the CBI director selection process. I cannot abandon my constitutional duty by engaging in a biased process. The Leader of the Opposition is not a rubber stamp.”
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Gandhi alleged that the central government has repeatedly used the Central Bureau of Investigation to target political opponents, journalists, and critics. He emphasized that the inclusion of the Leader of the Opposition in the selection committee was intended to prevent such institutional misuse, yet he has not been given any meaningful role in the process.
Gandhi mentioned that he had repeatedly requested the self-appraisal reports and 360-degree evaluation reports of the candidates involved in the selection process, but these requests were ignored. He accused the committee of presenting files for 69 candidates during the meeting for the first time while completely refusing to provide the 360-degree reports.
He asserted that reviewing these documents is essential for accurately assessing the candidates’ performance and work style. The lack of information, he argued, mocks the selection process and ensures that the government can choose a pre-determined candidate.
In his letter, Gandhi also noted that he had registered his dissent during a previous meeting on May 5, 2025, and had sent suggestions for a fair and transparent selection process to the Prime Minister on October 21, 2025, but has yet to receive a response.
He concluded by stating that the government has reduced the selection committee to a mere formality by withholding crucial information. Gandhi made it clear that the role of the Leader of the Opposition is not just to provide a formal stamp of approval, and he firmly disagrees with the current process.
