Opposition Will Face Consequences Over Womens Reservation Bill: Rita Bahuguna Joshi

Prayagraj, April 17: Senior BJP leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi emphasized the urgency of the Women’s Reservation Bill, stating that after years of waiting, further delays are unacceptable. She warned that the opposition, which is currently creating a ruckus over the bill, will face repercussions.

In a discussion in Prayagraj, Joshi noted that the conversation around women’s reservation has been ongoing for the past 30 to 40 years. Since the implementation of reservation in Panchayati Raj, the demand for women’s reservation in state assemblies and the Lok Sabha has been persistent.

She pointed out that the bill has been presented multiple times in the house but has repeatedly stalled without discussion.

Joshi credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s determination and efforts for the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in 2023. Now that the time has come for its implementation, she criticized the opposition for obstructing progress, as the Prime Minister aims for full implementation by 2029.

“I believe this bill must pass now. If there are further delays, we will not tolerate it. We are grateful to the Prime Minister for facilitating this debate, but we are also somewhat displeased with the opposition’s attitude,” she stated.

Joshi highlighted various objections raised by the opposition. Initially, there were concerns about including Christians and Muslims alongside Dalits. Later, it was argued that allocating seats to women would reduce the number of seats available for men. Additionally, southern states expressed worries that family planning would lead to a decrease in their population, resulting in fewer seats.

She praised the government’s formula, which proposes increasing the total number of Lok Sabha seats from 815 to around 850 without reducing any state’s representation. Of these, 33% will be reserved for women, based on the 2011 census rather than any future census.

The senior BJP leader criticized the opposition’s current stance, which demands a census before discussing the bill. “Should we wait longer for 33% reservation? This is the 131st constitutional amendment and should be passed now. There is no need to create new disputes regarding OBC reservations, as there is no provision for OBC reservations in general seats,” she added.

Joshi concluded by asserting that the bill must be passed, emphasizing the pressing need for women’s representation. “Women are watching all of this. We are very hopeful and confident that the Prime Minister’s call will receive support from all political parties. This constitutional amendment will pass. Those who oppose it will face consequences.”
