Chandigarh, March 20: The Punjab Police’s Cyber Crime Branch has achieved a significant breakthrough. The state cyber crime unit has dismantled a ‘mule account’ gang linked to foreign handlers. This gang facilitated the transfer of money obtained through fraudulent means. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with this case.
The accused opened bank accounts using forged documents. They operated fake companies to provide such accounts. These accounts were used for transactions involving the proceeds of crime, commonly referred to as money laundering. Over the past two years, they earned commissions through these activities, playing a role in defrauding thousands and being involved in scams worth crores of rupees.
The police have frozen ₹20 lakhs deposited in the bank accounts. Additionally, they seized digital currency valued at $5,100, twenty-three ATM cards, two laptops, seven mobile phones, five SIM cards, forged identity documents, fourteen checkbooks, and various seals. These items serve as evidence of the gang’s operations.
An FIR has been registered at the State Cyber Crime Police Station. The police are now investigating the gang’s extensive connections. Further actions are underway to identify more individuals involved in this racket.
The Punjab Police has stated its commitment to taking strict action against cyber criminals. Their goal is to create a safe and trustworthy digital environment for citizens. People are advised to remain vigilant against cyber fraud. They should avoid sending money in response to suspicious links or calls and contact the cyber helpline at 1930 if they have any concerns.
