Chandigarh, August 1: Punjab Police has achieved a significant breakthrough in combating drug trafficking. The Counter Intelligence unit in Amritsar has dismantled a cross-border drug smuggling and organized crime network. One suspect has been arrested, and authorities have seized 20 kilograms of heroin from him. Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced this development on Saturday.
The arrested individual has been identified as Om Sharma, a resident of Tarn Taran. In addition to the heroin, police confiscated the vehicle used for smuggling. DGP Yadav revealed that the initial investigation indicates Sharma was operating under the directives of handlers based abroad, who are connected to cross-border traffickers.
According to the DGP, Sharma was responsible for transporting heroin to various locations across Punjab. He provided details about the operation, stating that the Counter Intelligence team in Amritsar received specific intelligence regarding associates of the foreign handler engaged in illegal drug trafficking. They were reportedly using drones to bring heroin from their counterparts in Pakistan to the border areas of Ajnala. Following the handler’s instructions, this heroin was then delivered to Sharma, who further distributed it to other parties.
Sharma had recently received a large shipment of heroin and was en route to deliver it in the Sohiyan Kalaan area on Fatehgarh Churian Road in Amritsar. The police team conducted a raid, apprehending Sharma and recovering the 20 kilograms of heroin.
DGP Yadav stated that investigations are ongoing to trace the entire network and uncover potential links to previously apprehended drug trafficking modules. An FIR has been registered under sections 21, 25, and 29 of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar on July 31.
