Chandigarh, February 25: Punjab Police has achieved a significant breakthrough in combating cross-border drug and arms trafficking. The state’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, announced this development on Wednesday.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, DGP Yadav revealed that the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) in Fazilka acted on a specific tip-off, leading to the dismantling of a major cartel involved in cross-border drug and arms smuggling.
During this operation, one suspect was arrested, and authorities seized 2.102 kilograms of heroin, seven pistols (including a Glock 9mm, four .30 bore pistols, and two 9mm pistols), along with ten live cartridges. Initial investigations indicate that this shipment of heroin and firearms was sourced from smugglers based in Pakistan, aimed at escalating criminal activities and creating instability in Punjab.
DGP Yadav reported that an FIR has been registered at PS SSOC, Fazilka, and further investigations are underway to uncover the network’s connections. Punjab Police has reiterated its commitment to completely eradicate the cross-border smuggling network and to establish a safe, drug-free Punjab.
This incident is part of Punjab’s ongoing anti-drug campaign, which has seen several significant operations in recent months. For instance, in January 2026, a joint operation by the BSF and Punjab Police near Fazilka resulted in the seizure of approximately 2.1 kilograms of heroin, 21 sophisticated pistols (including Glock, Beretta, and Zigana), and hundreds of cartridges.
In that operation, Pakistani smugglers attempted to deliver the shipment across the international border, but it was thwarted by counter-intelligence and technical inputs. Police described it as a conspiracy supported by the ICI, aimed at escalating gangster violence in the state.
Drug and arms smuggling from Pakistan via drones, on foot, and other methods has long been a persistent issue in Punjab. Under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the police have launched campaigns like ‘Operation Prahar’, resulting in thousands of raids and the seizure of large quantities of narcotics and illegal weapons.
