Hoshiarpur, July 20: Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), announced the expansion of Punjab’s free pilgrimage scheme during a devotional event titled “An Evening in the Name of Lord Shiva” held in Talwara, Hoshiarpur district. Starting in August, three new religious routes will be introduced for devotees, including Khatu Shyam Ji-Salasar, Haridwar-Rishikesh, and Mathura-Vrindavan.
Kejriwal stated that registration for these new routes will commence in August. The state government is preparing to facilitate free pilgrimage for approximately 150,000 devotees. He emphasized that the government will cover all expenses for travelers, including air-conditioned buses, accommodation, meals, and other essential services.
Previously, the scheme allowed pilgrims to visit Shri Darbar Sahib and Shri Anandpur Sahib. The aim now is to increase the number of religious sites to benefit a larger number of people.
While discussing the economic assistance program for women, Kejriwal mentioned that women who have registered but have not yet received funds will be disbursed their dues on August 1. He noted that Scheduled Caste (SC) women would receive additional financial support.
Kejriwal highlighted various initiatives by the Punjab government, stating that 90% of households in the state receive free electricity. Families are provided with health insurance coverage of up to 1 million rupees, and women receive monthly financial assistance. He claimed that the government is working with integrity, ensuring sufficient resources for public welfare programs.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, present at the event, remarked that Punjab’s greatest strength lies in its unity, peace, and brotherhood. He assured that the state government is operating transparently for the public good and is accelerating development projects.
The Chief Minister also revealed that 19 toll plazas have been closed in the state, resulting in daily savings of millions for the public. He added that thousands of government jobs have been provided to youth through a transparent process, and continuous improvements are being made in road, irrigation, and electricity infrastructure.
