Pune, June 16, 2025: Chaos broke out aboard a moving Daund–Pune DEMU shuttle train early Monday morning when a fire erupted in one of the coaches near Yavat, in Pune district, Maharashtra. The fire originated inside the train’s toilet, reportedly due to a discarded bidi (local cigarette), causing panic among passengers and a tense rescue operation.
🔥 Fire Erupts in Toilet, Traps Passenger Inside
The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 AM, when passengers noticed smoke and flames coming from the toilet area of the DEMU coach. According to officials, a man had been locked inside the toilet and began screaming for help, which drew immediate attention.
Acting swiftly, fellow passengers broke the toilet door to rescue the individual, who was successfully pulled out without injuries. Their quick thinking likely prevented a tragic outcome, as the fire was spreading rapidly due to paper and flammable waste in the compartment.
👮♂️ One Detained; Cause Linked to Careless Smoking
Authorities from the Railway Police at Daund later confirmed that a passenger from Madhya Pradesh has been taken into custody. Preliminary investigation suggests he threw a lit bidi into a dustbin, igniting the waste and triggering the fire.
“The cause of the fire appears to be negligence. Garbage in and around the toilet area—especially paper—acted as fuel,” said a railway police officer. Fortunately, the fire was contained quickly, with no serious damage or injuries.
🛑 Train Services and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for the Indian Railways confirmed the prompt response from staff and passengers, which ensured all individuals aboard remained safe. Train services were briefly halted for inspection, but resumed shortly after the area was declared secure.
The Railways has reiterated its strict no-smoking policy and has launched a fresh appeal to passengers to avoid irresponsible behavior onboard. Enhanced checks and awareness drives are also being considered to prevent such incidents in the future.
🚨 Incident Highlights Passenger Safety and Vigilance
This incident not only exposes the dangers of negligence in public transport, but also highlights the courage and presence of mind displayed by passengers who saved a life under pressure.
Authorities have said further investigations are underway and appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible.
