Beijing, June 17: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has stated that emerging economies and developing nations lack sufficient representation at the United Nations. He emphasized that ongoing political and economic disputes worldwide are raising continuous questions about the UN’s role and effectiveness.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Wang made these remarks during a press conference on Wednesday in Beijing while releasing a white paper aimed at making the global governance system more equitable and just.
He asserted that regardless of a country’s size, power, or development status, all members of the international community should be treated equally. Wang stressed the need to give more importance to the voices of Global South countries.
The Chinese Foreign Minister noted that the world is facing new challenges, leading to interconnected global crises. He warned, “The ship of civilization has now entered dangerous waters, where hidden reefs and fierce storms exist.”
Wang pointed out that current disputes reveal deep-seated and long-standing differences. He referenced “black swan” and “gray rhino” events, indicating that the number of unexpected crises and obvious yet overlooked threats is on the rise.
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Wang Yi urged all parties to work towards an immediate ceasefire. He stated that developing a sustainable security framework is essential for lasting peace and stability in the region.
He emphasized that all relevant parties should collaborate on efforts that can lay the foundation for long-term security and stability in the Middle East.
Wang concluded that the white paper aims to build international consensus on effective responses to global challenges, and maintaining the UN’s reputation and central role is crucial for the success of this initiative.
