Puducherry, February 12: The Puducherry Assembly will convene on Thursday, where Chief Minister N. Rangasamy is set to present the interim budget. This meeting is likely to be the last session of the current assembly before the upcoming elections.

The Chief Minister, who also oversees the Finance Ministry, will seek approval for government expenditures over the next five months. Traditionally, Puducherry presents its full budget in March. However, due to the impending elections and the government’s term ending in April, an interim financial statement has become necessary.

The assembly session will commence with a tribute meeting, followed by the presentation of the interim budget. The government will also request legislative approval for additional expenditures incurred during the current financial year.

Debate is expected during this session, as opposition parties, including Congress and DMK, plan to raise several issues, including allegations of corruption and concerns regarding the proliferation of counterfeit drugs in the union territory.

The N.R. Congress-BJP coalition government, led by Rangasamy, came to power following the 2021 assembly elections. With the term ending in April, this session is anticipated to be the final one under the current administration.

The assembly proceedings will resume only after the elections and the formation of a new government, which will then present a full budget. The Election Commission is expected to announce the election schedule by the end of this month. Once the dates are revealed, the model code of conduct will come into effect.

Following this, ministers and legislators will need to return their official vehicles and assembly offices to the legislative secretariat as per election guidelines.

The Puducherry Assembly consists of 33 members, including 30 elected representatives and three nominated members. Among the elected representatives, there are 10 from the N.R. Congress, six from the BJP, six from the DMK, two from Congress, and six independents. The three nominated members are from the BJP.
