Jamshedpur, August 1: Protests led by opposition leader Babulal Marandi erupted in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, against alleged negligence at the Sadar Hospital, which resulted in the deaths of a mother and her newborn. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized a vigorous demonstration on Friday, opposing the filing of FIRs against protesters advocating for justice.
BJP workers rallied from the hospital to the district collectorate, chanting slogans. During a gathering there, leaders criticized the state government and district administration on various issues, including health care, recruitment exams, employment, education, infrastructure, law and order, and corruption.
The incident that sparked the protests occurred on July 17, when a woman named Reena Devi and her newborn died, leading to public outrage, vandalism, and road blockades. Following this, the hospital administration filed complaints against BJP district president Sumit Sharan, district secretary Kamlesh Mandal, youth wing district president Kunal Singh, city president Pradeep Rawat, and several unnamed individuals.
Babulal Marandi condemned the government’s actions, labeling them as arbitrary. He alleged that the health system in Jharkhand is in disarray, with the government prioritizing its interests over public welfare. Marandi raised concerns about the poor state of hospitals and the inadequacies of government ambulance services. He accused the government of corruption in the tendering process, benefiting close associates while neglecting the public.
He also highlighted issues related to illegal mining and irregularities in the sand, iron, and coal businesses, asserting that despite the state’s rich mineral resources, the public is not reaping the benefits. Marandi criticized the lack of transparency in the recruitment exams conducted by JPSC and JSSC.
Former MP Sunil Soren accused the administration of biased actions and urged officials to work impartially. Former minister Randhir Singh questioned the state of health services, alleging that the district administration operates under pressure. Former MLA and BJP candidate from Jamtara, Sita Soren, labeled the government’s six-and-a-half-year tenure as a failure, raising concerns about health, employment, and education. She claimed that legal actions are being taken against youth who voice their demands.
