Progress in US-Iran Talks: White House Expresses Optimism for Agreement

Washington, April 16: The White House has indicated that discussions with Iran are “meaningful and ongoing.” However, tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to impact the pace and outcomes of these negotiations.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters that the United States is actively engaged in talks with Iran. She dismissed reports suggesting that Washington has formally requested an extension of the current ceasefire.

Jean-Pierre stated, “We are fully engaged in these discussions at this time,” adding that the conversations are “meaningful and ongoing.”

She noted that negotiations with Iran are taking place at multiple levels, and the possibility of face-to-face meetings is also being considered. However, nothing has been finalized yet.

“I have seen some reports regarding the possibility of in-person talks. Discussions are ongoing, but nothing can be considered final until there is an official announcement from the White House,” she clarified.

Speaking about mediation efforts, Jean-Pierre remarked, “Pakistan has been an excellent mediator throughout this process,” emphasizing that it remains the sole mediator in these talks.

She mentioned that several countries have shown interest in advancing the negotiations, but the administration is focused on maintaining a structured dialogue process through Islamabad.

Jean-Pierre indicated that if the next round of talks is confirmed, it will likely take place at the same location as previous meetings.

The White House expressed cautious optimism regarding the direction of the talks, stating, “We feel good about the possibilities of an agreement,” referencing ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Additionally, Jean-Pierre clarified that the administration is not setting a timeline for any potential agreement. “I would never establish a timeline on behalf of the President of the United States,” she stated.

She also noted that President Donald Trump has made his stance on the negotiations clear, saying, “He has outlined his limits in these discussions to the other side.”

The White House also clarified its position on maritime activities in the region. While a blockade targeting Iranian-affiliated vessels is in place, U.S. forces are ensuring freedom of movement for other ships.

Jean-Pierre emphasized, “Our U.S. forces support the freedom of movement for vessels coming through the Strait of Hormuz from non-Iranian ports.”

She stressed that this action applies to all vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports.
