Priyanka Chaturvedi Criticizes Government Over Energy Security and Election Commission Issues

New Delhi, March 12: Shiv Sena UBT Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi has raised several critical issues against the central government. She questioned the proposed impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the situation in West Asia, the gas crisis, statements from Home Minister Amit Shah, and the role of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Chaturvedi stated that serious questions are being raised regarding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Doubts persist about the election process, EVMs, and voter lists.

She remarked, “There are many questions regarding Gyanesh Kumar, whether it concerns the election process, the EVM issue, or the cuts in voter lists under the SIR. The removal of names from voter lists, particularly in areas where the opposition is strong, is not just a battle in West Bengal. It is a fight for voters’ rights across the country.”

She emphasized that constitutional bodies like the Election Commission must remain entirely independent and free from any influence. Responding to the ongoing tensions in West Asia, Chaturvedi criticized the government’s preparedness, stating it appears weak. The government raised LPG prices at the first signs of the crisis and implemented measures like the Essential Commodities Act to control gas supplies.

Chaturvedi noted, “LPG prices were increased in the first week, and laws for gas control were enacted. Now, a rationing-like environment has emerged, distinguishing between domestic and commercial use.” The Shiv Sena MP pointed out that the gas crisis is visibly impacting industries. Many manufacturing units, especially in the tiles industry and other gas-dependent factories, are facing challenges.

She added, “Several manufacturing units that require gas are now nearly shut down. Hotel and restaurant owners are issuing notices that if this situation continues, they will have to close their establishments. The general public will be the most affected.”

Chaturvedi also criticized the government on energy security, stating that India heavily relies on imports to meet its energy needs. The current crisis has revealed that the country was not adequately prepared for such a situation.

She accused the government of being influenced by the U.S. stance on decisions like purchasing oil from Russia. “When the U.S. makes a decision, India follows suit. This indicates a lack of sufficient preparation regarding our energy security,” she said.

She mentioned that the government claimed the country had about 72 days’ worth of energy reserves, but a decline was evident in the first week of the crisis.

Chaturvedi also questioned the proceedings in Parliament and the role of the Lok Sabha Speaker. She noted that a significant number of MPs have been suspended in recent years while several important laws were passed during that time. “We have seen a large number of MPs suspended while crucial laws, including new criminal laws, were passed when the opposition was outside the House,” she stated.

She alleged that the Lok Sabha Speaker’s position is being politicized. This issue is not just about one individual but reflects a system where questions of impartiality are being raised.
