
Kolkata, February 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sorrow over the passing of former Union Minister Mukul Roy. Roy passed away at around 1:30 AM on Monday in a private hospital in Kolkata after a prolonged illness.
In a post on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi stated, “I am saddened by the demise of former Union Minister Mukul Roy. He will always be remembered for his political experience and efforts to serve society. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”
Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and a BJP MLA, also mourned Roy’s death. In his post on X, he wrote, “I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of senior leader Mukul Roy. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
Abhishek Banerjee, a TMC MP and General Secretary, remarked on X, “The passing of Mukul Roy marks the end of an era in Bengal’s political history. He was a seasoned leader whose contributions shaped a significant phase in the state’s public and political journey. As a founding pillar of the Trinamool Congress, he played a crucial role in strengthening the organization in its early years. His dedication to public life will always be remembered. I express my deep condolences to his family, friends, and supporters. May God grant his soul peace.”
The 73-year-old Mukul Roy had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata. His son, Subhranshu Roy, confirmed that his father passed away around 1:30 AM on Monday. According to close associates, Roy had been undergoing treatment for several health issues for an extended period, but there was little improvement.
Mukul Roy was one of the founding members of the Trinamool Congress and was considered one of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s closest confidants. He served as the Railway Minister during Manmohan Singh’s government.
He was also a BJP MLA, having joined the party in 2017 after leaving TMC, and won as a BJP candidate from the Krishnanagar (North) Assembly constituency in Nadia district in 2021. However, he returned to TMC a few months later.
