Bishwanath, April 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Assam on Wednesday as part of his election campaign. During a large rally in Bishwanath district, he confidently asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the government in Assam for the third time, attributing this unwavering faith to the development work accomplished by the ‘double-engine government.’
Modi stated that since independence, Congress has gambled with Assam’s identity for power. He accused the party of consistently compromising the interests of Assam. He highlighted Congress’s major sin of integrating illegal immigrants into the mainstream. To retain its power, Congress allowed illegal encroachments, enabling outsiders to settle wherever they pleased. Consequently, vast tracts of Assam’s land fell under illegal occupation.
He emphasized that the entire nation knows Congress is anti-development and has been a source of corruption in independent India. However, he noted that Congress has committed sins in Assam that only the people of the state are aware of. Modi claimed that Congress has played with Assam’s soul, dignity, identity, and security. Their biggest wrongdoing was bringing illegal immigrants into the mainstream. To protect its vote bank, Congress permitted illegal land occupations, ensuring their grip on power. Currently, the BJP is taking action against these illegal encroachments. Modi criticized Congress’s misgovernance, which he said has not spared Assam’s forests, sanctuaries, or one-horned rhinos.
He pointed out that the BJP-NDA is receiving support nationwide because it promotes development while respecting heritage, ensuring security, and fostering prosperity. In contrast, he accused Congress of harboring hatred for the country’s heritage and glorious history. He reminded the people that they cannot forget Congress’s disrespect towards Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika. While the BJP-NDA government honored the great Hazarika with the Bharat Ratna, the current Congress president mocked this recognition. Modi stated that they have honored even those Congress leaders who contributed to Assam and the nation, but Congress tends to forget its own leaders.
The Prime Minister noted that the youth play a significant role in building a developed Assam. He stressed the need for good roads, bridges, and modern rail connectivity in the state. Such infrastructure benefits agriculture, industries, and tourism, creating ample job opportunities for the youth.
He remarked that a decade ago, visitors to Assam were shocked by its dismal condition. However, today, people are pleasantly surprised by the state’s improved connectivity. Recently, the world witnessed Assam’s highways where fighter jets can land.
Modi announced that vehicles will soon traverse beneath the Brahmaputra River. The government is constructing its first underwater two-tube road and rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra, with an investment of ₹18,662 crores. This project will benefit the people of Assam by generating new employment opportunities.
He expressed his delight in sharing that Assam is setting new records in crude oil production. The production of petrol, diesel, and gas is on the rise. While the world grapples with a shortage of petroleum and crude oil, Assam is strengthening India.
