New Delhi, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : President Droupadi Murmu honored 48 teachers with national awards during a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on September 5. This event marked National Teachers’ Day, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second president. In her address, President Murmu congratulated the award recipients and highlighted the essential role of dedicated teachers as nation builders.
She emphasized that the observance of Teachers’ Day is a way for citizens to pay respect to educators and the entire teaching community. “A society that honors its teachers is truly progressive,” she stated.
Reflecting on her own educational journey, Murmu expressed that being among teachers reignites her memories as both a teacher and a student. She recalled the affection and guidance from her own teachers, which greatly influenced her life. Additionally, she fondly remembered her students from a school in Odisha, acknowledging the valuable lessons she learned from them.
The President paid tribute to Savitribai Phule, recognized as India’s first female teacher in modern times, who made significant contributions to girls’ education by establishing schools in the 19th century. “On this day, I salute Savitribai Phule,” she remarked.
She also recognized the founders of notable educational institutions, such as Rabindranath Tagore, who established Shantiniketan in West Bengal, and freedom fighter Pandit Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, who set up a school in Odisha’s Puri district. These initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable development through nature conservation among students.
President Murmu noted with pleasure that many of the awardees were rural teachers, expressing hope that their methods and achievements would inspire others in the teaching profession. She reiterated that dedicated teachers are indeed the frontline builders of the nation.
