New Delhi, August 1: In a remarkable achievement for India, two gold medals were secured in judo at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow. Asmita Day clinched the first gold medal, followed by Harsh Singh who won the second. President Droupadi Murmu extended her congratulations to both athletes for their historic successes.
President Murmu took to the official X platform to express her admiration, stating, “Congratulations to Asmita Day for making history as the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your outstanding victory is a remarkable example of determination, skill, and dedication. Your success will inspire many emerging athletes to follow in your footsteps. The President also congratulated Harsh Singh, writing on X, “Heartfelt congratulations to Harsh Singh for winning the gold medal in judo at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your exceptional skills, patience, and dedication have brought India another glorious moment in sports. Keep bringing honor to the nation.”
Asmita triumphed over Canada’s Heidi Quach in the women’s 48 kg judo final, becoming the first Indian judoka to win gold in Commonwealth Games history. Just minutes after her victory, Harsh Singh defeated Australia’s Joshua Katz in the men’s 60 kg final, marking him as the first Indian man to achieve gold in judo at the Commonwealth Games.
In addition to Asmita and Harsh, Yamini Maurya also earned a silver medal in judo. She competed in the women’s 57 kg final against England’s Aselia Toprak but faced defeat, settling for the silver medal. This marked India’s third medal in judo for the day.
The gold medals won by Asmita and Harsh, along with Yamini’s silver, highlight India’s growing dominance in judo on the global stage.
