Glasgow, July 31: In an impressive display at the Commonwealth Games, Yamini Maurya secured a silver medal in the women’s 57 kg judo final on Friday. This marked India’s third medal in judo for the day.
Yamini faced England’s Aselia Toprak in the final but ultimately fell short, settling for the silver.
Before Yamini’s achievement, India celebrated historic success in judo with two gold medals. The first gold was won by Asmita Devi, followed by Harsh Singh, who made history as the first male athlete from India to win a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games.
Asmita Devi triumphed in the women’s 48 kg final, defeating Canada’s Heidi Kwach with a score of 2-1 in a thrilling and closely contested match. She displayed remarkable strategic skill and defensive discipline, securing her most significant victory at the Commonwealth Games.
Harsh Singh claimed gold in the men’s 60 kg judo final by overcoming Australia’s Joshua Katz. The 23-year-old faced tough competition initially but executed a powerful attack with just 41 seconds remaining. He utilized a brilliant waza-ari—judo’s second-highest scoring technique—and held his ground for a memorable win.
The gold medals from Asmita and Harsh, along with Yamini’s silver, highlight India’s growing dominance in judo on the global stage.
