New Delhi, July 31: The Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow marked a historic day for India. The nation celebrated two gold medals in judo, a first in the sport’s history at the Games. Asmita Day clinched the first gold, followed by Harsh Singh who secured the second.
Asmita triumphed in the women’s 48 kg judo final, defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach. With this victory, Asmita became the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Just minutes later, Harsh Singh emerged victorious in the men’s 60 kg final against Australia’s Joshua Katz, making him the first Indian man to achieve this feat in judo at the Games.
Both athletes received congratulations from Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their remarkable achievements.
Vice President Radhakrishnan expressed on social media, “A fantastic day for Indian judo. Congratulations to Asmita Day and Harsh Singh for winning gold medals in the women’s 48 kg and men’s 60 kg judo events at Commonwealth Games 2026. Their outstanding performance is the result of years of hard work, discipline, and determination. Prime Minister Modi praised Asmita, stating, “A truly golden performance. I am proud of Asmita Day for winning gold in the women’s 48 kg judo final. This achievement will be remembered and will help popularize judo even more. Best wishes for her future endeavors.”
Regarding Harsh Singh, the Prime Minister remarked, “A historic day for Indian judo. Congratulations to Harsh Singh for winning the gold medal. His passion and dedication are evident in his remarkable performance. Best wishes for his upcoming efforts.”
Sports Minister Mandaviya and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also congratulated Asmita Day on her historic achievement.
Mandaviya wrote on social media, “Making history on the judo mat. Congratulations to our Khelo India athlete Asmita Day for winning gold in the women’s 48 kg event at Commonwealth Games 2026. She has etched her name in history as the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.”
Chief Minister Saha added, “Asmita Day, the daughter of Tripura, has made history. Once again, she has brought glory to our state on the international stage. This talented judoka from Belonia has achieved a historic milestone by winning gold in the women’s 48 kg category at the Commonwealth Games.
