New Delhi, March 19: In a significant development in Assam’s political arena, Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present during the meeting.
This gathering is perceived as a strategic move to bolster the BJP’s position in the state ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Sources indicate that Shah encouraged Bordoloi to contest in the assembly elections. Central Minister Piyush Goyal also participated in this important discussion.
Following his entry into the BJP, Bordoloi resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament. He stated that his decision was influenced by Chief Minister Sarma’s effective governance and his dissatisfaction with the Congress party.
Bordoloi expressed, “I have been greatly impressed by the Chief Minister’s work and his approach. His commitment to governance attracted me.” He voiced his frustration regarding the lack of respect he received within the Congress party, stating, “I did not receive the respect I deserved. I was mentally distressed while being part of the Congress.”
He also hinted at ongoing issues within the party and a lack of identity that had troubled him for a long time, leading to his decision to leave Congress. Bordoloi believes that the BJP offers a platform where he can work meaningfully to uphold Assamese identity and dignity.
“I will work to protect the pride of the Assamese people within the BJP,” he affirmed. His move is seen as a setback for Congress in Assam, especially as political dynamics shift rapidly ahead of elections.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Bordoloi to the BJP and criticized Congress, stating, “There is no longer any space for self-respecting individuals in Congress.”
