New Delhi, March 19: The adoption of green buildings in Northern India is accelerating, with the National Capital Region (NCR) taking the lead, followed closely by Uttar Pradesh. This insight was shared by experts during the GreenTech Summit 2026 organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
According to the summit, Uttar Pradesh has registered 1,673 IGBC-certified projects, covering an area of 1.78 billion square feet. This reflects the state’s rapid progress towards sustainable development.
In New Delhi, there are 794 projects spanning 0.63 billion square feet, highlighting the capital’s significant contribution to the green building movement.
The overall scope of green buildings in the NCR is even broader, with a total of 2,475 projects covering an area of 2.81 billion square feet.
In Uttar Pradesh, this growth is concentrated in major cities. Noida and Greater Noida account for 748 projects, Gurugram has 651 projects, while Faridabad and Ghaziabad together have recorded 282 projects.
The event brought together industry representatives, policymakers, technical experts, and sustainability specialists to discuss the promotion of climate technology in India’s construction sector.
The summit also emphasized that India is progressing towards its ‘Developed India 2047’ goal and net-zero targets. Green technology, low-carbon materials, digitization, and integrated design will play crucial roles in making future cities sustainable and resilient.
Baljeet Singh, Co-Chair of the IGBC Delhi Chapter and Executive Vice President of Brookfield Properties, stated, “India still has much of its infrastructure to build. This presents a significant opportunity to shape future cities through climate-friendly design, low-carbon technology, and digital innovation.”
The report also highlighted that Uttar Pradesh is receiving policy support to promote green buildings. This includes incentives such as additional Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for projects rated IGBC Gold or higher.
Additionally, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has arranged to offer a 5% additional FAR free of charge for such projects.
According to the report, the Asia-Pacific region is witnessing an increase in construction costs due to green building certification, energy monitoring, and stringent material standards.
