Shalimar Bagh, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Tensions are rising in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, following a demolition operation targeting an illegal extension of a mosque. Opposition parties have voiced strong objections, claiming that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is prioritizing divisive politics over effective crime control.
Akhilesh Yadav‘s Samajwadi Party MP, Awadhesh Prasad, criticized the BJP, asserting that the party aims to maintain power by fostering communal divisions and undermining the principle of unity in diversity. He stated that the upcoming 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh would be historic, predicting that the BJP would face significant losses. Prasad expressed confidence that the Samajwadi Party would emerge victorious, suggesting that if the BJP secured even 50 out of the 403 seats, it would be a surprise.
Congress leader Abhishek Dutt also condemned the demolition, questioning the government’s priorities. He highlighted the rising crime rates in Delhi, pointing out that the administration fails to take action against heinous crimes like the sexual assault and murder of minors. Dutt called for similar demolitions against those involved in theft at the Ram Temple, accusing the BJP of engaging solely in Hindu-Muslim politics.
The demolition in Shalimar Bagh was part of a broader initiative to widen Max Hospital Road, resulting in the removal of illegal encroachments, including the Madina Mosque and nearby homes. In response to the demolition, local tensions have escalated, prompting authorities to deploy a significant police presence to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents. Some residents have expressed their discontent with the operation.
