Lucknow, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has raised significant concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he highlighted that doubts about the commission’s impartiality are emerging not just among political parties but also within the general public. Yadav questioned, “Whose orders is the Election Commission following?”
He emphasized that if members of an independent constitutional body cannot express dissent without facing repercussions, it poses a serious threat to democracy.
Yadav pointed out that the objections raised by election commissioners themselves cast doubt on the commission’s operations. He stated that such behavior is detrimental to democracy and raises questions about the fairness of elections and the governments formed as a result.
The Sapa leader expressed concern that the internal disagreements among commission members indicate a troubling situation. He accused certain individuals of acting as puppets of power, manipulating democratic processes to maintain their positions. Yadav also referenced the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, alleging that voters supporting his party were systematically removed from the electoral rolls.
He noted that the party had filed complaints along with affidavits regarding these issues, but no action was taken against any officials. Furthermore, during recent by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party had also questioned the electoral process. Yadav argued that the lack of accountability for responsible officials intensifies the concern over who is ultimately responsible for the electoral process.
He claimed that in some cases, signatures were forged for individuals who were incapable of signing, leading to the removal of a significant number of voters from the rolls. Yadav stressed that if complaints are ignored and no actions are taken against officials, it undermines public trust in the electoral system.
He asserted that the recent revelations about the commission’s decisions being rejected by some of its own officials further illustrate the dysfunction within the body. Yadav warned that this raises questions about the constitutional legitimacy of the governments formed during this period.
He concluded by stating that the integrity of elections is paramount in a democracy. If there is no action taken on complaints regarding voter list alterations and electoral processes, it weakens the democratic framework.
In addition to his comments on the Election Commission, Yadav criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government over the alleged theft of offerings from the Ram Temple. He accused the government of rampant mismanagement and destruction of systems, claiming that homes were demolished under the guise of development in Ayodhya, leaving residents without the chance to retrieve their belongings.
Yadav promised that if the Samajwadi Party returns to power, compensation will be provided to those affected. His statements come in light of ongoing discussions regarding investigations into the temple offering theft and related charges. The Uttar Pradesh government has informed the Supreme Court that CCTV footage from the temple complex shows multiple suspicious theft incidents, and the process of filing charges is underway.
Yadav criticized the government for neglecting constitutional norms, rules, and the rights and dignity of the people.
