Political Outcry Follows Tragic Death of Toddler in Mukundpur Drain Incident

New Delhi, May 6: A political storm has erupted following the tragic death of a two-year-old girl who fell into an open drain in Mukundpur Part-2, Delhi. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha visited the grieving family on Wednesday, offering condolences and holding the BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) accountable for the incident.

Jha described the incident as deeply saddening and heartbreaking. He emphasized that the drain, where the child lost her life, falls under the jurisdiction of the MCD. He alleged that the drain was transferred to the MCD by the Flood and Irrigation Department last year, yet the corporation failed to take any measures to cover it.

According to Jha, this negligence clearly lies with the MCD, which has cost an innocent child her life. He noted that on July 30, 2025, the executive engineer of the Flood and Irrigation Department had informed about the transfer of the drain. Prior to that, the drain had been cleaned on July 6. Therefore, it was the MCD’s responsibility to ensure regular cleaning and cover the open sections.

He claimed that he had repeatedly warned the relevant departments through letters and phone calls about the open drain and the potential for accidents, but his warnings were ignored. Jha also questioned the actions taken by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta against the engineer of the Flood and Irrigation Department.

He stated that if the investigation reveals any involvement of that department, action should be taken. However, he insisted that the primary responsibility lies with the MCD. Jha accused the government of attempting to shield the corporation’s officials, which he found incomprehensible. He expressed concern over the political blame game surrounding this incident.

Jha criticized the local BJP councilor, who is also the chairman of the zone, for failing to fulfill their responsibilities. He pointed out the poor sanitation conditions in the area, with heaps of garbage indicating administrative negligence.

The AAP MLA demanded that the government provide adequate compensation to the affected family and take strict action against the responsible officials. He added that mere action cannot compensate for the family’s loss, urging the government to adopt a humanitarian approach and offer financial assistance.

Jha mentioned that he has written to the Flood and Irrigation Department again, requesting the covering of the drain. The department has assured him that the drain will be covered within four to five days. However, he acknowledged that while this step may prevent future accidents, it cannot undo the damage that has already been done.
