Bengaluru, March 24: A political controversy has emerged in Karnataka following the Congress government’s decision to allocate an additional ₹10 crore in aid for the landslide victims in Wayanad, Kerala. The BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) sharply criticized this move on Tuesday.
Tejasvi Surya, MP from Bengaluru South and national president of the BJP’s youth wing, questioned the state government’s “accountability and dignity.” On the social media platform X, he asked whether any accountability remains in the Congress government, which is spending Karnataka’s resources on political interests in another state.
He highlighted the pressing issues in Karnataka, including a drinking water crisis, poor roads, and the plight of indebted farmers. Surya questioned the government’s moral right to spend millions in another state amid these challenges. He labeled the decision a “betrayal” of the Kannada people.
The Karnataka unit of the BJP accused the government of financial mismanagement and misprioritization. They pointed out that while salaries for guest teachers, Anganwadi workers, and NREGS workers remain unpaid, ₹10 crore is being approved for Wayanad.
The BJP alleged that this funding is intended to benefit the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi. They also demanded that the state government settle outstanding payments to contractors and provide compensation to farmers affected by unseasonal rains.
Meanwhile, the Janata Dal (Secular) expressed similar concerns, stating that millions in Karnataka struggle for basic housing while the government focuses on rehabilitation efforts in Wayanad.
Opposition parties have questioned the decision to spend public funds outside the state, labeling it a politically motivated step. They accused the Congress leadership of prioritizing electoral calculations over the interests of Karnataka’s citizens.
The BJP described this governance as “high command-based,” asserting that the decision betrays the Kannada people. They also reminded that the Karnataka government had provided ₹10 crore in aid for Wayanad landslide victims in 2024.
Notably, in 2024, the state government had allocated ₹10 crore for the construction of homes for 100 families affected by the landslide in Wayanad. However, the Congress government has yet to respond in detail to these allegations.
