Political Controversy Erupts Over Bhawanipur Strong Room Visit by Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, May 1: A political controversy has intensified in West Bengal regarding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee‘s visit to the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) strong room in Bhawanipur. The opposition has raised questions about the timing and nature of this visit. Leader of the Opposition and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari has labeled the visit as mere “drama,” making several serious remarks.

Speaking to reporters, Adhikari stated, “While it is not objectionable for a candidate to visit the strong room, the manner in which it was done raises questions. What was the justification for staying there for four hours? The Chief Minister’s behavior during this time was not normal. Such activities create unnecessary doubts, especially when the election process is already governed by established rules.”

Adhikari also questioned the timing of Banerjee’s visit and her behavior, saying, “Mamata Banerjee leaving her home early on election day is unusual for her. She has contested elections multiple times, but this time, a noticeable change in her behavior is evident. The public and media should consider the reasons behind this shift.”

Regarding concerns over tampering with the EVMs, he asserted, “The electoral system is completely secure, and there is no room for any discrepancies. Each EVM has a specific number, and it is linked with the VVPAT system, ensuring transparency. Such allegations are merely aimed at spreading confusion.”

Adhikari further alleged, “Some leaders from opposition parties were planning protests, but those efforts have completely failed. This clearly indicates that the public does not support them. Mamata Banerjee is losing her political ground and is taking such steps out of fear of losing in the upcoming elections.”

He also commented on the issue of re-polling, stating, “The decision for re-polling in Magrahat West is correct, but more booths in the Diamond Harbour area should also undergo the same process. Re-polling at just four booths is insufficient and should be implemented on a broader scale.”

Additionally, he expressed confidence in the Election Commission‘s procedures, saying, “The Election Commission makes decisions based on various processes, including CCTV footage, observer reports, and reports from presiding officers.” He clarified that his party respects the Election Commission and does not engage in politics that questions institutions.
