Kuala Lumpur, February 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Malaysia has generated significant discussion. India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, stated that this visit is historic in many ways, reviving and reshaping strong civilizational and cultural ties between the two nations.
High Commissioner Reddy highlighted, “In India, we have a payment gateway called the National Payments Corporation of India. They have an international branch, NIPL, and Malaysia has its own payment gateway known as Penet. An agreement was signed just a day before this visit, and the Prime Minister has now announced it.”
He noted that several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, including over 11 expressions of interest. Defense and security cooperation has been a crucial pillar of the India-Malaysia strategic partnership, which has now evolved into a comprehensive strategic alliance.
Regarding PM Modi’s visit, Reddy remarked, “This has been a historic trip in many respects. It was impactful and revitalized strong civilizational and cultural relationships while also renewing existing ties. The significance of this visit lies in the fact that it marks the Prime Minister’s third trip to Malaysia, yet it feels like the first, as he announced during this visit that it is his first international trip of 2026. For us, it is also the first visit after the bilateral relations were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in August 2024, following Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to India.”
He added, “The identity of the relationship between the two countries is evident from the fact that there were two or three significant aspects of this trip that illustrate its outcomes. Firstly, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim personally welcomed our Prime Minister at the airport, a gesture that was highly appreciated. Shortly after, they participated together in an event for the Indian community called ‘Salamat Datang Modiji,’ which means ‘Welcome, Modiji.’ This event took place at a convention center with over 12,000 attendees, including Malaysians and Indian citizens residing in Malaysia.”
The Indian High Commissioner further stated, “This was a unique event where, for the first time, both Prime Ministers addressed such a large audience. It was also a special occasion where around 800 Malaysian dancers performed classical Indian and folk dances, which was officially recognized in the Malaysian Book of Records. This showcases the strong cultural links and heritage between Malaysia and India, receiving widespread acclaim.”
