New Initiative Launched to Enhance School Safety in East Delhi
A new pilot project aims to improve road safety for school children in East Delhi, focusing on 28 schools in the area.

New Delhi, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi BJP president, Harsh Malhotra, inaugurated the “Safe Walk to School Zone” pilot project on Monday at the Samerville School in Vasundhara Enclave. This initiative is designed to enhance the safety of school children in East Delhi. BJP legislator Arvinder Singh Lovely was also present at the launch.
Malhotra emphasized the importance of road safety, stating that it is a critical concern not just for the Ministry of Road Transport but for society as a whole. He remarked, “Road safety is a serious issue. It is not just the responsibility of the Ministry of Road Transport, but a matter of concern for everyone.”
He outlined several measures being implemented under this initiative, including the construction of prominent zebra crossings, speed breakers to prevent accidents, railings for children, designated stopping points for school buses, and signage indicating speed limits and upcoming zebra crossings.
“We will begin work on this initiative outside 28 schools in East Delhi. As soon as the restrictions are lifted, we will start,” Malhotra noted. He expressed confidence that the pilot project would succeed, with plans to eventually expand it to all 270 schools in East Delhi.
School safety remains a pressing issue in India, where over 240 million students are enrolled in approximately 1.467 million schools, making the protection of children a significant national responsibility.
In July, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Tarunjeet Singh Sandhu, called for a comprehensive and forward-looking approach to school safety during the National Safe School Leadership Summit 2026 held at the PHD House. He had also played a key role in declaring July as “Child Safety Month.” Sandhu stated that the goal of education should be to create an environment where young minds can learn and develop their potential, which is impossible without a fundamental sense of safety.
He further noted that the concept of school safety has evolved significantly over the years. While physical infrastructure, fire safety, and emergency response remain critical, modern safety standards also encompass cybersecurity, mental health, transport safety, and the ability to effectively handle unforeseen circumstances.
Sandhu emphasized that as India moves towards its goal of becoming a “developed nation” by 2047, educational institutions will play a crucial role in shaping future citizens.
