Floris Jan Bovelander praises Indias contribution to hockey at the Asian Champions Trophy 2026 in Jalandhar, highlighting Punjabs influence.

Jalandhar, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : Dutch hockey icon Floris Jan Bovelander expressed his delight at attending the Asian Champions Trophy 2026 in Jalandhar, Punjab, upon receiving an invitation from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. Speaking at the tournament held at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium, the two-time Olympic gold medalist reflected on the honor of being personally invited, stating, “I was surprised and proud that Chief Minister Mann remembered me and invited me to be part of this prestigious tournament. This invitation clearly shows his immense love for hockey, which is why I decided to come to Jalandhar.”

Bovelander, known for his remarkable career from October 1985 to August 1996, scored 215 goals in 241 international matches for the Netherlands. He hailed India as a powerhouse in world hockey. He also acknowledged the significant contributions of Asian countries, particularly India and Pakistan, in popularizing the Olympic movement globally.

Recalling his longstanding ties with Indian hockey, the legendary player, often referred to as ‘Flop’, ‘Floppy’, and ‘Boom Boom Bovelander’, emphasized India’s pivotal role in elevating the sport on the international stage. He noted that most of his fond memories of Indian hockey are linked to players from Punjab, especially Sikh athletes, asserting that Indian hockey cannot be imagined without Punjab.

During his visit, Bovelander participated in a joint training session with 37 coaches and emerging hockey players from the Surjit Hockey Academy, which operates under the Punjab government’s supervision. He actively engaged with the players, demonstrating techniques with a hockey stick and teaching drag flicks. Accompanying him were Olympic medalist Gurjant Singh, Dronacharya awardee Jivanjot Singh Teja, and hockey coach Avtar Singh.

To inspire the next generation of hockey players, Bovelander took part in a drag-flick training session with young trainees, sharing valuable technical insights drawn from his extensive international experience. The Punjab sports department honored Bovelander for his outstanding contributions to the sport. Deeply touched by the warmth and affection he received from Punjab, Bovelander committed to attending key matches at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Hockey Stadium in Mohali on November 4 and 5.
