Support Grows for Dia Mirza Amid Controversy Over Pollution Awareness Video

Dia Mirza faces backlash after BMC removes her pollution awareness video. Supporters demand accountability and public apology from the BMC.

Mumbai, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : The controversy surrounding Bollywood actress Dia Mirza intensified in Mumbai following the removal of her pollution awareness video by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This decision came after objections raised by Mumbai BJP President Amit Satam, who criticized the actress’s message aimed at promoting an eco-friendly Diwali.

On November 1, Satam expressed his discontent on social media, stating, “We do not need to learn how to celebrate Diwali from Dia Mirza. Our traditions are deeply rooted in our culture.” Just hours later, the BMC took down Mirza’s video, while videos featuring other celebrities like Madhuri Dixit and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane remained online.

The BMC had initially launched a campaign urging citizens to refrain from using fireworks to combat rising air pollution during Diwali. Mirza, along with other notable figures, participated in this initiative, advocating for a pollution-free celebration.

In response to the BMC’s actions, voices of support for Mirza have emerged. A statement from her supporters labeled the removal as discriminatory and demanded the resignation of the municipal commissioner, along with a public apology to the actress.

The statement emphasized the positive intent behind Mirza’s video, which aimed to raise awareness about air and noise pollution caused by fireworks. It criticized the selective removal of her content while allowing others to remain, calling it shocking and unacceptable.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted that all citizens deserve equal treatment, regardless of their religion. It stressed the BMC’s responsibility to uphold constitutional values of equality and secularism, demanding accountability for what they termed a discriminatory act.

Supporters are now calling for the reinstatement of Mirza’s video on the BMC’s social media platforms and an unconditional public apology from the actress. They asserted that the divisive politics of hate and attempts to fragment society in the name of religion will not succeed in Mumbai. The city’s true identity is rooted in unity, mutual respect, and inclusivity among its diverse communities.
