New Delhi, August 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Drug-Free Youth for a Developed India’ campaign on Sunday. This initiative, which will run for 100 weeks, encourages every citizen, especially the youth, to participate in the fight against substance abuse.
PM Modi stated, “The campaign we witness today is for individuals, families, society, and most importantly, the nation. The name ‘Drug-Free Youth’ clearly reflects the commitment of this movement towards a developed India.”
As the country aims for development, it is crucial for the youth to be physically and mentally healthy, filled with self-confidence, and distanced from the perils of drugs. This is the core objective of the campaign. We must pledge that our youth understand the dangers of substance abuse, remain vigilant, and stay away from it.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the very name of this initiative, ‘Drug-Free Youth’, signifies its purpose and commitment. As India progresses towards becoming a developed nation, it is essential for our youth to be mentally and physically fit, confident, and free from the vice of addiction. This is the main goal of the initiative. We must ensure that our youth comprehend the threats posed by drugs, stay alert, and avoid this destructive habit.
PM Modi noted that some tasks can be daunting when undertaken alone, leading to fatigue and discouragement. However, when these tasks become a collective effort, with millions working together, individuals find the energy to accomplish what they could not do alone. This campaign, driven by such collective strength, will resonate with every young person.
Addressing the youth, he urged, “You are all leaders in this significant movement. You have reinforced my belief in the awareness, wisdom, and seriousness of India’s youth towards their responsibilities. I wish you all the best for this campaign. You are the nectar-bearing generation of India. In the next 20-25 years, you will shape your lives and lead the nation to its goal of a developed India by 2047.”
The Prime Minister added, “The upcoming 100 Sundays will mark 100 strong steps towards a drug-free India. If any youth has mistakenly fallen into addiction, it does not mean that all paths are closed to them. We must not hide this issue behind social stigma. Seek help for those in need. Use medical assistance to help your loved ones overcome addiction. We should foster a culture of open communication within families to prevent children from falling into such traps.”
He also highlighted that societal support, along with the power of yoga and meditation, strengthens our resolve against addiction. Today, we have rehabilitation centers to assist those seeking to quit. Thousands of students from schools, colleges, and universities are participating online in this program, alongside millions of volunteers from ‘My Bharat’. Over 10 million youth from various sectors and backgrounds are united in this effort.
PM Modi called upon college and university professors to engage students in discussions about the dangers of drugs alongside their academic curriculum. “Initiate a movement against addiction on your campuses. Your efforts can yield significant results,” he said.
He reassured the youth that the government stands firmly with them in the fight against drugs. There has been a significant crackdown on drug traffickers, with many more arrests and seizures of drugs worth thousands of crores compared to previous years. This demonstrates the government’s stringent stance against drug abuse.
The Prime Minister urged the youth to preserve their potential by staying away from drugs. “Drugs may provide temporary euphoria, but they can severely damage your career and family,” he warned.
