PM Modi Highlights Yak Chhurpi in Mann Ki Baat, Farmer Expresses Gratitude

Leh, April 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned ‘Yak Chhurpi’ during the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program, prompting a heartfelt thank you from nomadic farmer Thenle Nurbu.

In an interview with a news agency, Nurbu expressed gratitude on behalf of all yak herders in Ladakh. He noted that India participated for the first time in an international cheese competition held in Brazil, featuring over 30 countries and more than 2,700 cheese varieties.

Nurbu shared that India won four medals at this prestigious global event, including an award for a Ladakhi entry. He expressed pride in Ladakh’s representation on the international stage and thanked PM Modi for highlighting this achievement in the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio program. Nurbu stated that this recognition has boosted the morale of local producers and drawn global attention to the traditional cheese-making art of the Himalayan region.

Yak Chhurpi is made from yak milk in Ladakh’s Changthang region. Recently, it gained international recognition by winning a medal at the World Cheese Awards held in Brazil, establishing itself as a traditional and nutritious dairy product.

PM Modi’s mention of Yak Chhurpi in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ was part of the ‘Local to Global’ initiative aimed at giving Indian flavors international recognition. He also referenced ‘Kalari’ from Jammu and Kashmir and ‘Topli Nu Paneer’ from Gujarat. Neetu Sharma from Udhampur remarked that PM Modi’s mention of Kalari has brought pride and fame to the product, which has already received a GI tag. The growing interest in Kalari has also created job opportunities for the unemployed in the region.
