New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday emphasised the spiritual, cultural, and civilisational importance of Somnath Dham. He described it as an eternal source of faith, courage, and self-respect for generations of Indians.
Ahead of his scheduled visit to the historic Somnath Temple on 11 January, Prime Minister Modi shared a message on the social media platform X, focusing on the lasting heritage of this sacred site.
In his post, the Prime Minister wrote, “The grand legacy of the holy Somnath Dham has been awakening the consciousness of every individual for centuries. The divine energy emanating from here will continue to kindle the lamp of faith, courage, and pride across ages.”
He also shared a Sanskrit verse highlighting Somnath’s spiritual significance and its association with Lord Shiva. The verse describes Somnath as a sacred and powerful place where spiritual perfection and liberation are attained.
The meaning of the verse is, “Lord Shiva, as Adinath, revealed this sacred and immensely powerful region for the welfare of all beings, based on his eternal principles. Bathed in divine light, this holy place is where one achieves spiritual completeness, virtue, and salvation.”
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi recalled his previous visits to the Somnath Temple and emphasised the strength of faith despite repeated historic attacks on the temple.
He noted in his post that the attacks on the temple, beginning with the first major assault in January 1026, did not weaken the spiritual resolve of the people. Instead, these events reinforced India’s cultural unity and led to the temple’s repeated restoration and revival.
Prime Minister Modi further shared some photographs from his earlier visits and invited others who have visited Somnath to share their pictures as well.
The Somnath Pride Festival is being organised to mark 1,000 years since the first major attack on the temple in 1026. This festival celebrates the undying spirit of the sacred temple and India’s cultural resilience, as the temple has been rebuilt many times despite numerous destructions by invaders over the centuries.
