Second Leg of Foreign Visit

Prime Minister Modi will arrive in the Maldives today as part of the second leg of his foreign visit. Earlier, he was in the UK for a two-day trip during which a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement was signed between India and the United Kingdom in his presence.

Modi to Attend Maldives’ 60th Independence Day as Chief Guest

PM Modi is visiting the Maldives on the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. He will serve as the Chief Guest at the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations. This marks his third official visit to the Maldives, with previous visits taking place in 2018 and 2019.

First Visit by a Foreign Leader Under President Muizzu’s Term

Significantly, this will be the first visit by a foreign head of state since President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November 2023. No other foreign leader has made an official visit to the Maldives during Muizzu’s tenure until now.

India-Maldives Relations Show Signs of Improvement

President Muizzu came to power with a strong anti-India stance, which led to strained ties between the two nations in the early months of his presidency. However, bilateral relations saw improvement in October 2024, when India extended a $750 million currency swap agreement during Muizzu’s visit to India. The deal helped the Maldives address a shortage of foreign currency.
