
New Delhi, March 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Sunday to review the situation in West Asia and discuss proposed relief measures.
During the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary provided a comprehensive presentation on the global situation and the measures taken by various ministries and departments of the Indian government. The discussion covered the expected impacts on various sectors, including agriculture, fertilizers, food security, petroleum, electricity, MSMEs, exporters, shipping, trade, finance, and supply chains. The overall macroeconomic landscape of the country and future actions were also deliberated.
The ongoing conflict in West Asia is anticipated to have significant short-term, medium-term, and long-term effects on the global economy. The impact on India was assessed, and both immediate and long-term countermeasures were discussed. A thorough evaluation of the availability of essential needs for the common man, including food, energy, and fuel security, was conducted. Detailed discussions were held on short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures to ensure the continuous availability of essential goods.
The meeting also assessed the impact on farmers and their fertilizer needs for the Kharif season. Steps taken in recent years to maintain sufficient fertilizer stocks will ensure timely availability and food security. Discussions also included alternative sources of fertilizers to guarantee continuous availability in the future. It was confirmed that adequate coal supplies at all power plants will prevent any electricity shortages in India.
Measures to diversify import sources for critical sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and other industries were discussed. Similarly, new export destinations will be developed in the near future to promote Indian goods. Several proposed measures from various ministries will be prepared and implemented after consultations with all stakeholders in the coming days.
During the meeting, PM Modi directed the formation of a group of ministers and secretaries to work diligently with a ‘whole-of-government’ approach. He also instructed regional groups to collaborate with all stakeholders.
PM Modi emphasized that this conflict is a continuously evolving situation affecting the world in various ways. In such circumstances, every possible effort should be made to shield citizens from the impacts of this conflict. He directed that all government branches work together to minimize inconvenience for citizens. The Prime Minister also called for maintaining proper coordination with state governments to prevent hoarding and black marketing of essential items.
