Piyush Goyal Discusses Agricultural Growth and Global Market Positioning in Meeting

New Delhi, May 8: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held a meeting with Dr. M.J. Khan, President of the Indian Chamber of Food and Agriculture, to discuss initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of farmers in the country. The meeting also focused on sharing India’s agricultural expertise with African nations to promote development in the Global South.

Dr. Khan is a renowned Indian agricultural expert and policy analyst. He is a leading voice in agricultural business, policies, and sustainable development, having spearheaded initiatives such as the national policy on organic farming and the Global Agricultural Leadership Summit.

On the social media platform ‘X’, Goyal stated, “We discussed initiatives to enhance farmers’ living standards, strengthen India’s position in the global agricultural market, deepen collaboration with the African region, and share India’s expertise in this field.”

He further mentioned, “We also deliberated on new ways to enhance agricultural cooperation for long-term food security.”

The India-Africa partnership in agriculture is a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening food security through technology transfer, capacity building, and private sector investment. India collaborates with African nations to improve agricultural productivity, mechanization, and food processing, thereby reducing reliance on food imports and promoting sustainable and resilient agri-food systems across the continent.

India has already taken steps to provide training to African farmers in soil health, water management, and crop production, sharing its expertise gained from agricultural development. Key focus areas include low-cost technological solutions, agricultural mechanization (tractors), and advanced seed varieties.

India has also extended lines of credit for agricultural machinery to countries like Angola and Lesotho and supports investments in agricultural businesses to boost productivity.

The aim of this collaboration is to reduce post-harvest losses and promote climate-friendly agricultural practices to combat food insecurity. This partnership is crucial for strengthening food security in the Global South.

Additionally, India plays a significant role in promoting green energy in African nations. Indian power companies have begun sharing experiences with their African counterparts on grid modernization, energy storage, and the integration of variable renewable energy. For instance, the Power Grid Corporation of India has collaborated with Africa50 and other African institutions on transmission projects, aiding in the integration of solar and wind energy across various countries while reducing dependence on fossil fuel plants.
