New Delhi, July 15: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with European Union (EU) Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on Wednesday to review the progress of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
In a post on the social media platform X, Goyal shared that both leaders discussed new opportunities for enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, critical technologies, and resilient supply chains.
Earlier in March, Goyal and Sefcovic had met during the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) held in Cameroon, where they also reviewed the progress towards finalizing the India-EU FTA.
The signing process for the FTA between India and the EU is advancing following an announcement made in January 2026 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in New Delhi.
During his visit to Brussels, Piyush Goyal also met with Bernd Lange, the Chair of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee (INTA). They discussed the extensive opportunities the India-EU FTA would create for businesses, industries, and people on both sides, paving the way for a prosperous economic partnership. Goyal extended an invitation to Lange to visit India to further strengthen cooperation.
Previously, India and Belgium had discussed measures to enhance collaboration in trade, investment, technology, logistics, and workforce mobility. Goyal held talks with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Employment, Economy, and Agriculture David Clarinval to strengthen the economic ties between the two nations.
Goyal emphasized that both sides shared insights on the transformative potential of the India-EU FTA, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening economic relations while considering mutual interests.
Additionally, the Minister met with EU Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero, and Clean Development Wopke Hoekstra. They discussed enhancing cooperation in clean development, climate change mitigation, and sustainable industrial development.
The meeting particularly focused on increasing collaboration in renewable energy, green hydrogen, clean technology, innovation, investment, and robust value chains, enabling both parties to work together towards achieving their shared net-zero goals.
