Patwari Arrested for Taking Bribe in Gandarbal, J-K: CBI

Srinagar, January 30 – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a patwari (revenue clerk) from Gandarbal district in Jammu and Kashmir for accepting a bribe, the agency announced on Friday.

According to a CBI statement, the patwari was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a complainant at Mauja Gadoora in Gandarbal. The case was registered on January 28, 2026.

The accused public servant allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 as a bribe for issuing a jamabandi citation and making amendments in the land revenue records. The CBI said it laid a trap and arrested the patwari while accepting the bribe from the complainant. The investigation is ongoing.

The CBI emphasized that its strict action against corrupt public officials reflects its firm commitment to curbing corruption. Citizens facing demands for bribes from public servants or dealing with corruption cases are encouraged to report such incidents.

In Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, any government employee seeking a bribe for official work can be reported to the CBI Anti-Corruption Bureau in Srinagar by contacting the mobile number 9419900977.

The CBI, Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and the local police jointly have jurisdiction to prevent corruption among central and union territory government employees in Jammu and Kashmir.

Public accountability and transparency had been sidelined in Jammu and Kashmir for over 25 years following the onset of terrorist violence in the 1990s. However, since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 and the restoration of rule of law, separatist violence has declined, and accountability in government services has started to return.
