Imphal, August 14: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla stated on Friday that the Partition of 1947 was not merely a division of land, but a profound human tragedy that inflicted suffering, loss of life, and displacement on millions.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh emphasized that countless lives were lost and significant property damage occurred due to the Partition. However, those who survived and reached India displayed remarkable courage, rebuilding their lives and starting anew.
The Governor and Chief Minister attended the ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ event at the Palace Auditorium, organized by the Manipur State Film Development Society.
In his address, Governor Bhalla remarked that the Partition was more than just a division; it was a human tragedy. He noted that while some moments in the nation’s history are celebrated, others require us to pause, remember the past, and learn from it.
The Governor highlighted that the Indian government declared August 14 as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day‘ in 2021, ensuring that the suffering, sacrifices, and displacement experienced during the Partition remain a part of national memory.
During the event, the Chief Minister reflected on the hardships faced by people during the Partition, reiterating the loss of countless lives and extensive property damage. He noted that those who survived managed to regain their footing and embark on new beginnings.
The Chief Minister referenced the documentary “A New Postbox: Tales from the Partition,” which conveyed a powerful message: “Our eyes are not behind us but in front, reminding us to look ahead rather than dwell in the past.”
He expressed deep concern for the internally displaced individuals affected by violence near the Churachandpur district border. These individuals reported that they can only return home during the day, as they lack the confidence to stay there at night. They are also deprived of opportunities to earn a livelihood.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the pain experienced during any crisis is universal. He urged the state’s residents to promote peace and harmonious coexistence.
A two-minute silence was observed during the event to pay tribute to all those affected by the Partition.
