Sydney, August 3: A portion of a building collapsed in Sydney, Australia, on Monday, causing chaos in the area. Two individuals sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized, while several others were evacuated from the site. Debris from the collapse fell onto a nearby petrol station, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Emergency services received reports of the building collapse around 11 AM on Wattle Street in the Ultimo area. Police, fire, and ambulance teams quickly arrived to initiate rescue operations.
Paramedics assessed a total of seven people at the scene. Due to the severity of their injuries, two men were rushed to the hospital. One is approximately 30 years old, while the other is around 60. One was admitted to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and the other to St. Vincent’s Hospital.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, construction was underway as part of a student accommodation project when a section of the roof of an old warehouse and an adjacent brick wall collapsed.
Peter Murray, acting superintendent of NSW Fire and Rescue, reported that there was significant chaos when crews arrived. He stated, “The wall had collapsed, and a large portion of the building fell. It was a tragic and dangerous situation. The walls are made of bricks, which are quite heavy.”
Fortunately, there were no additional casualties reported. The NSW Fire and Rescue team noted that workers on-site managed to evacuate several individuals as the building began to fall. Residents nearby described hearing a loud explosion as a significant part of the structure crumbled.
